Unveiled: C4's emotional film headlines Paralympic Games opening night
Category: News ReleaseChannel 4, official broadcaster of the Paralympic Games, has commissioned an intense and powerful short film, narrated by actor Sean Bean, to headline its opening night coverage on 29th August.
Award-winning British filmmaker Daryl Goodrich is director of Channel 4's ‘The Journey'. It begins seven years ago, following the story of 7/7 survivor and GB hopeful, Martine Wright, alongside a nation whose celebrations at winning the Games were marred by the shocking terrorist attacks in London the following day, then riots and recession.
The film's concept is the brainchild of IMG Executive Producer Mike Wilmot, and was commissioned by Channel 4's Deborah Poulton, Sports Editor, Paralympics as part of the broadcaster's unique and dedicated programming.
Poulton said: "The film is a powerful portrayal of events following London's successful bid for the Games, and it will play an important role in officially opening the Paralympics and headline our opening coverage. We selected Goodrich as director due to his ability to use film-making to capture the mood and sentiment of an entire nation."
In 2005, two short films by Bradford-born Goodrich gained were acclaimed for their role in London's successful bid to host the Games. The then London Mayor Ken Livingstone attested that the films "won us the Olympics".
Goodrich explains: "I was thrilled to be commissioned by Channel 4 to be part of this project, which tells a truly humbling story and will hopefully resonate with the audiences around the world who will be watching."
Martine Wright was on board the train that was bombed outside Aldgate Station. She lost both her legs from above the knees. Following seven years in rehabilitation, Martine is now one of Britain's medal hopes in sitting volleyball.
Goodrich adds: "It was fantastic to work with Martine because she is an absolute inspiration, and it's an honour to capture her journey."
