Channel 4 and E4 win six Broadcast awards

Last night, in front of an audience of 1000 TV-types with trendy hair and chunky specs, Channel 4 emerged as the single most successful broadcaster after a hugely successful night at the Broadcast Awards 2013.

At a star-studded* bash at the Grosvenor House Hotel, hosted by Rob Brydon, E4 sketch show Cardinal Burns was the big winner, the only show to take home two awards, for Best Comedy Programme and Best Multichannel Programme. In a very strong field, Top Boy (sort of an urban Downton Abbey, if you missed it) was named Best Drama.

Educating Essex won the award for Best Documentary series, proving that TV viewers can be entertained by people from Essex who aren’t orange. Make Bradford British won Best Popular Factual series, a show so good it had the people of Bradford out celebrating in the streets last week (though that may have also had something to do with the football).

In the Best News or Current Affairs Programme category, there was a win for Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields: War Crimes Unpunished. The International Programme Sales category was won by The Audience.

Two programmes were also highly commended: Mummifying Alan: Egypt’s Last Secret (in the Original Programme category) and House Party (Music programme).

Hurrah. Let Horseferry Road be awash with cheap cava (all our money goes on programming. If you don’t believe me, you should see my payslip.)

 

*At least I assume it was star studded. Nobody invited me. I don’t have any chunky specs, and am bald, so don’t qualify.
