Channel 4 commissions 'Turn Up...The Nineties' (w/t)

Category: News Release

Channel 4 has commissioned a 90 minute documentary that will celebrate the most culturally significant decade of our generation – the Nineties.  From Kate Moss to Damien Hirst, David Beckham to Oasis, today’s most influential celebrities rose to fame in this exciting and tumultuous era. This fascinating story produced by NERD will chart the rise and fall of Cool Britannia as told by the people who lived it.

The 90s was the last decade before the Internet took over our lives, the last decade of real celebrities before the advent of Big Brother in the year 2000 and the last time in Britain when youth culture exploded into the mainstream, challenged the establishment and captured the imagination of the world.  Two decades on and we are still experiencing the aftershock from a time when our new found confidence extended to every corner of the globe.

Delving into the worlds of music, art, fashion, film, TV and politics, ‘Turn Up...The Nineties’ will reveal the thrills, spills and bellyaches of this decade of excess set against the entertainingly nostalgic and thought-provoking social, political and economic backdrop of incredible archive footage and will feature contributions from the likes of Jarvis Cocker, Irvine Welsh, Alex James, Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting, The Full Monty), The Happy Mondays, Massive Attack, Terry Christian (The Word), James Brown (Loaded Magazine), Carl Cox, Paul Oakenfold, Jazzy Jeff and Turner Prize winner Rachel Whiteread.

‘Turn Up…The Nineties’ (w/t) will go out in the same weekend as the TFI special, presented by Chris Evans, a celebration of the iconic, anarchic show, first broadcast in 1996, that will look back at some of the brilliant moments in its colourful history, as well as introducing some brand spanking new features.
Jonny Rothery, Commissioning Editor for Music says: “We’re all waiting for the next pop culture revolution where a chart battle between two bands can make the six o’clock news. Whilst we wait, I’m really pleased to be taking a look back at this fascinating period when Generation X rose to prominence and everyone was mad for it.
Jeremy Lee, Executive Producer, NERD, says: “From house music in the clubs to Air Huaraches in the front window of Nike town, the Nineties are everywhere. NERD TV is proud to be working with Channel 4 to produce this 90 minute special that is a timely look at a decade that rewrote the rules of fashion, art, music and politics and defined a generation – a decade in which British Youth took on the establishment and won.
‘Turn Up…The Nineties’ (w/t) is directed by Nico Wasserman and the Executive Producer is  Jeremy Lee whose credits for Channel 4 include the Idris Elba fronted ‘How Hip Hop Changed the World’ and ‘How Clubbing Change the World’, ‘Rewind…The Tube’ and ‘Rewind…The Christmas Hits’.
