Channel 4 follows Miss World hopefuls in Beauty Queen or Bust

Category: News Release

Channel 4 today announced the commission of a new three part series, Beauty Queen or Bust, which follows the aspirations of the young women who pin their hopes and dreams on winning a place in Miss World, the planet’s most glittering beauty contest.

The glitz and glamour of the international competition has to start somewhere and each year the regional heats take place in ordinary towns and cities across the country. Beauty Queen or Bust will follow a handful of young women as they enter the regional heats of the Miss England competition in Blackpool, Grimsby and Wolverhampton.

The factual entertainment series will follow beauty pageant veterans and first time entrants as they put in the hard work and preparation for the competition. Each episode will explore the motivation for some of the entrants who are keen to grasp all of the opportunities being a beauty queen could offer .

For these girls winning the title would mean more than being crowned a hometown beauty queen, it would also offer them an escape from their rather less glamorous lives and a chance to show the world that their home towns are places to be proud of.

Beauty Queen or Bust was commissioned by Channel 4 Head of Factual Entertainment, Liam Humphreys, and Factual Entertainment commissioning editor Tina Flintoff. The series will be made by RDF Television with executive producer Daniel Fromm.

Daniel Fromm, RDF Television,  said: “It may be one of the most iconic events on the planet, but very few of us know anything about where the hunt for the next Miss World actually begins.  By focusing on three small town heats, we want to find out about the lure of being a beauty queen for a new generation of young women. And better understand what their lives are like, as they grow up in in local economies still battling their way out of recession.”
