Channel 4 to get all sewn up with taxidermy documentary

Category: News Release

Channel 4 has commissioned a one-off documentary special from Mentorn Media, on the growing trend of taxidermy, it was announced today.

Directed by award winning director Matt Rudge and commissioned by Emma Cooper, the hour-long documentary with the working title of Get Stuffed!, will enter into the world of taxidermy practitioners, its collectors and its businesses, illustrating the breadth of the people involved in the craft, and the variety of creations they produce.

In recent years, the craft of taxidermy has seen an increase in the number of people participating in it, and also the number of people purchasing it.  Most associated with Victorian times, nowadays taxidermy is very much in vogue, and sees a whole range of people involved in its creation, from hobbyists attempting to preserve a dead mouse, to modern artists using it to create a flying helicopter cat. Their creations can be as varied and wide as those involved.

From the more experimental taxidermy professionals to members of the public who are buying taxidermy kits and going to beginners classes we’ll delve into the weird and wonderful world of stuffing.

Emma Cooper, Commissioning Editor at Channel 4 said: “Taxidermy as a pastime is having something of a renaissance around the world at the moment. This revealing one-off documentary will cast an eye on the characters behind the craftwork and the ways in which some people are making a living from the dead.”

Mentorn Media’s Director of Factual, Tayte Simpson, said: “We are delighted to be making this film for Emma Cooper and working with director Matt Rudge.  His film offers a jaw dropping look at the new world of taxidermy, it’s huge surge in popularity and how different people deal with death.  One contributor has stuffed his pet cat and turned it into a helicopter – taxidermy has come a long way from mounted animals in glass cabinets.”
