Channel 4 has received two nominations in the highly prestigious International Emmy Awards. The awards recognise excellence in television produced outside of the United States, with broadcasters and producers from over 60 countries competing for much-coveted nominations.

Channel 4’s Educating Yorkshire and No Fire Zone: The Killing Fields of Sri Lanka both received nods on Monday (13 October) at the announcement of the nominees for the 42nd International Emmy Awards.

No Fire Zone, made by Outsider Television and commissioned by Dorothy Byrne, is nominated in the Documentary category. The powerful investigative film examined the ramifications of the last days of the Sri Lankan Civil War upon the Tamil people. In a statement released at the time of airing Prime Minister, David Cameron, described it as “one of the most chilling documentaries I’ve watched”.

Educating Yorkshire, made by TwoFour and commissioned by Nick Mirsky, is nominated in the Non-Scripted Entertainment category. The series observed the staff and students at Thornhill Academy in West Yorkshire. The documentary won Moment of the Year at the Edinburgh International Television for the scenes featuring Year 11 pupil Musharaf overcoming his stammer. Helen Pidd of The Guardian described the series as “a great advert for some truly excellent and inspirational teachers”.

Winners will be announced at the 42nd International Emmy Awards, taking place on November 24, 2014 in New York.
