Channel 4 Specialist Factual commissions Guy Martin's Pit Stop

Category: News Release

Guy is set to take on the most coveted job in automotive engineering - being given unprecedented access and working as part of an elite Formula 1 pit crew. As usual he’ll be going in at the deep end - at the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa, over the August bank holiday with Williams Martini Racing.

Ahead of this, Guy will join one of the world's leading Formula 1 teams, Williams Martini Racing, at the team’s UK factory, where the chief mechanic will run him through the major tasks he’ll be expected to perform during the race weekend. The driver’s race is in the mechanics’ hands, so practice is essential. If Guy doesn’t make the grade he’ll be pulled off the project immediately.

During the race weekend Guy will be tasked with setting up the pit garage, assisting with building the multi-million dollar car, and will participate in two 90 minute practice sessions on Friday, a further hour practice session on Saturday, the three stage qualification process and the race itself. The pit crew look after both of Williams’ drivers – Brazilian veteran Felipe Massa and Canadian newcomer Lance Stroll – and every pitstop is crucial -  he is going to be working with the fastest team in the business.

After the race, as the drivers head for the nearest airport, a whole new day of work begins for the mechanics. It takes at least 10 hours to strip the cars, take down the pit box, and pack everything away ready to be transported to the next race. Guy will, of course, stay to the end.
