Last night Channel 4 won eight prestigious Royal Television Society Awards - more than any other single channel.

The main channel won six awards while E4 won two, both of which recognised new talent Michaela Coel (Chewing Gum).

It was a great night for Channel 4’s drama and comedy with No Offence taking the award for best drama series, with judges acknowledging that the series brought “something new to the genre”, while Coalition, described as “a clever and original film…beautifully written and performed” was awarded the RTS award for best single drama.

Channel 4’s comedy was in fine form with Catastrophe named best scripted comedy, described as “simply laugh out-loud funny” by the panel, while its stars and writers, Rob Delaney and Sharon Horgan, took the award for best comedy writers. E4 won the best comedy performance award which went to Michaela Coel for her role in Chewing Gum. Michaela also won the award for Breakthrough, again for her performance in Chewing Gum, which she also writes. Judges described her performance as “totally unique, edgy and brave … utterly original”.

Channel 4’s Chief Creative Officer Jay Hunt said: “It was a great night for 4. It was particularly thrilling to win so many awards for comedy and drama. Congratulations and thank you to all the teams who worked so hard for the channel.”
The Romanians Are Coming was named best documentary series, with judges saying the series was “full of exquisite layering” and the RTS history award went to Holocaust: Night Will Fall described as a “landmark film, an affirmation of the importance of television as a medium of truth”.

David Coulthard, who has joined Channel 4 to lead its Formula 1® coverage after the broadcaster took over the sports rights from the BBC, was named best sports presenter, commentator, or pundit for his work with the BBC.
