Channel 4 triumphed at the prestigious Grierson Awards last night, winning more awards than any other channel.

Gogglebox, Curing Cancer, The Romanians are Coming and The Paedophile Hunter were all honoured at the awards, which recognise documentaries that demonstrate quality, integrity, creativity, originality and overall excellence. Film4 backed films Citizen Four and 20000 Days on Earth also received awards for Best Arts Documentary and Best Doc on Contemporary Theme-International.

Gogglebox took home the prize for Most Entertaining Series as category presenter Grayson Perry praised it for being: "a love song to the simple pleasure of spending quality time with the people you love."

Perry himself picked up an award later in the evening, as Best Presenter for his acclaimed Channel 4 series ‘Who Are You?’ and was praised by jury chair, Lorraine Heggessey as “one of our greatest national treasures."

The Paedophile Hunter, screened last year, won Best Documentary on a Contemporary Theme - Domestic for its director Dan Reed, and was praised by the jury for its "provocative and confident" take on an important issue.

The celebrated The Romanians are Coming picked up the award for Best Documentary series, while Curing Cancer took home the award for Best Science or Natural History Documentary.

Jay Hunt, Channel 4’s Chief Creative Officer, commented: “The Grierson awards really matter because they recognise the craft of great film making. It’s a tribute to the amazing directors and producers we work with and the strength of the factual commissioners at 4 that we have dominated the awards for the second year running.”

The Grierson Awards were presented by Gareth Malone, who led the audience in a rousing sing-a-long before proceedings kicked off at the Mermaid Theatre.
