Film4 films have garnered an impressive 12 nominations for this year’s BAFTA’s, with ten for Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave, an Outstanding British Film nomination for Clio Barnard’s The Selfish Giant, and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for Paul Wright and Polly Stokes for For Those In Peril.

12 Years a Slave is nominated for ten awards, including in the major award categories of Best Film, Director for Steve McQueen, Leading Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor, Adapted Screenplay for John Ridley, Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o and Supporting Actor for Michael Fassbender.

Clio Barnard’s The Selfish Giant, her critically-acclaimed Bradford-set feature which was released in the UK last October, is nominated for Outstanding British Film, alongside Gravity, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Philomena, Rush and Saving Mr. Banks.

The nominations cement Film4’s position as one of the leading supporters of film in the UK.  They follow an estimable seven nominations at Sunday’s Golden Globe awards for Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave, which has been generating huge awards buzz since its world premiere at Telluride in August last year.  The film is Film4’s third collaboration with Steve McQueen following the critically acclaimed, Hunger and Shame.   12 Years a Slave is released by eOne Entertainment in the UK this Friday.

Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave) and George Mackay (How I Live Now, For Those in Peril) are also nominated for the EE Rising Star Award.
