Interview with Lucy Watson for Beyond Chelsea
Category: Interview1. Tell us, how thrilled are you to be returning to screens in Beyond Chelsea?
I am very excited. It feels like it has been a long time coming. I’ve been waiting for the right thing to come up and I’ve missed TV ever since I left Made in Chelsea eight years ago. I’m excited and nervous at the same time.
2. Life has moved on quite significantly since we last saw you, tell us what life looks like for you currently.
Life is very different since I was last on TV. I got married to my long-term partner [who I actually met on TV], we had a baby [who is seven months old] and I have my own business which I am incredibly passionate about. I am currently living in London but I am also renovating a dream forever home just outside of London. I’ve got a lot going on, but it’s all very exciting. I’ve grown up quite a bit since you last saw me on screen.
3. You’re reuniting with your besties for this show, tell us about the concept of Beyond Chelsea.
Beyond Chelsea is basically the three of us and our lives being filmed ‘fly on the wall’ style. This is us inviting cameras into our homes and our lives … and being followed around by a crew. It is very much the daily ‘goings on’ of our lives. It’s really nice for us to come together each episode to go over what has been going on in our week.
4. Why now? What made you want to return to screens in this show?
I think it was the right opportunity at the right time. There have been multiple things that have come my way, but they just haven’t felt right - it had to be the right project. This is with a familiar team and it feels like I actually am ready to share my life with the viewers. I feel people know a part of me and they are going to get to know me on a deeper level which is really special.
5. What will we see you navigating in this show? What will you be getting up to?
I guess the main thing people will see is me taking on motherhood. I became a mother seven months ago, so they are going to see how I juggle my life as a mum, as a wife and as a mum to fur children as well – and a businesswoman. People are going to see how I juggle daily life – I may not be perfect at it, but I do my best. They’ll also see my relationship in finer detail. There’s no hiding anything. I think it’s great this show has come at a time when I’ve got everything happening in my life and I’m so busy.
6. Why should fans get excited for this show? What stands out about it?
I think it’s going to be very familiar territory having the three of us back together and gives it that Made in Chelsea original nostalgia. As the fans have grown up with us, I’m sure some of them are at similar stages in their lives too and I’m hoping they can relate on levels – such as relationships, working, having a family … and everything life throws at you along the way.
7. It’s really important that when you’re juggling family life, business and staying in the public eye that you have the grounding of your friends. Have the three of you been each others rock?
It has been really lovely to connect with them. Binky and I are already close and we went through a lot on the show together. The three of us being back together is so familiar to me. It felt really natural filming with them again – it was very smooth and grounding.
8. Made in Chelsea continues to be a triumph in the Reality Tv world. Tell us about your time on Made in Chelsea…
I joined the show when I was 21 - I was on it for 4-5 years and did around ten series. Made in Chelsea showed me growing up and navigating those years. I poured my heart in to the show - I wear my heart on my sleeve and still do to this day, so people got to see my raw emotion and battle issues with friendships and relationships.
9. What would you say is the one most important thing that you’ve learnt from appearing on Made in Chelsea and taken into your life since finishing filming?
I would say I’ve learnt that I’m not everyone’s cup of tea – and I’m okay with that. It is very confronting watching yourself on TV and learning about yourself. I would say that I have a controversial personality in many ways and I’m ok with that too. I’ve now learnt how to think a little better before I speak and I’m not as outwardly judgemental as I used to be. I’ve also learnt that kissing on TV is horrific, but practice makes perfect!
10. What’s the one best piece of advice you’ve been given?
So many things, but I think the first thing that comes to mind is that ‘comparison is the thief of joy’. You can spend your life comparing yourself to others or perhaps someone who has a better situation than you. I think it is so important to water and focus on your own grass and be happy and content with that. I think its so important.
11. What is your favourite thing about being back in front of the camera?
I love the entertainment industry and I love the idea of entertaining people - that is something that comes quite naturally to me. I thrive in that environment. I love being part of, and creating something really fun.
12. Finally, if you’re fancying a night out on Kings Road, tell us your favourite hot-spot…
Oh well, it’s not exactly on the Kings Road, but Holy Carrot in Portobello Road. It’s the best food.
