Liberty opens its doors to Channel 4

Category: News Release

Channel 4 has commissioned Rize USA to make a three-part series, Making Liberty, about one of the last great emporiums for innovative fashion, beauty and eclectic design, as the retail team gear up for the store’s busiest time of year: the Christmas season.

From its history as a trailblazer offering discerning Victorian customers the most exciting goods from the colonies, Liberty’s buying team continues to source exclusive and cutting-edge products from all over the world whilst sticking to the principles of good taste and first class standards.

Run by a sparky, charismatic, rule-breaker from NYC, Ed Burstell, along with his right-hand woman, Kate Brindley (Head of Marketing and Communications), they manage a tightly knit team of self-confessed eccentrics. Fabric guru Kirstie Carey helps to make this is a retail team like no other. They are opinionated, fiery, and passionate with a business acumen rarely found on the shop floor. Not everyone fits in to the Liberty family but those who do are fiercely loyal. As are their customers. From the VIPs - those customers that spend the most in store - down to the once-a-year visitors to the scarf hall. Everyone comes with a story and a dream and leaves with an experience.

Dominating the skyline of central London’s historic Carnaby Street, Liberty is a true turnaround story, transformed in recent years from near bankruptcy to a hugely profitable business.

Emma Cooper, Commissioning Editor, Documentaries, said: “Liberty is the last bastion of eccentric, eclectic design and is jam-packed with a wonderful cast of colourful characters. Making Liberty will tell the everyday extraordinary stories of life within one of the world's best-loved and well-known stores”

Sheldon Lazarus, Creative Director, Rize USA, said: "We are thrilled to have secured access to the wonderful world of Liberty - an undisputed national treasure and one of Britain's most trusted brands. This Channel 4 series promises to immerse viewers in a truly special universe bursting with exotic, fashionable and ultra-luxurious wares."

Making Liberty will be shown this autumn on Channel 4.
