Looking ahead to 2016

Category: News Release

Hello! Welcome to 2016. Yes, of course, in your slow-moving, traditional world, constrained by the universal laws of time and physics (yawn) it’s still 2015. But we’re Channel 4. Here it’s already 2016, and this is just a teensy morsel of the televisual smorgasbord we’ll be serving up.

Drama & Comedy

Deutschland 83

“It’s only January but let’s call it already: coolest show of the year” - Grazia

“This is the next subtitled sensation……..unmissable TV” - Radio Times

“Your new subtitled obsession” - The Guardian

“Evocative and gripping…” - The Daily Mail

“Great fun” - The Daily Telegraph

A taut and gripping 8-part thriller. It’s 1983. The Cold War is heating up. Russian SS20 Missiles in East Germany are pointed West, American Pershing II Missiles will soon be placed in West Germany, to point East. The very real threat of nuclear conflict looms. Deutschland 83 follows Martin Rauch (Jonas Nay), a 24 year old East Germany native, who is thrust from the world as he knows and sent over the wall to the West as an undercover spy for the Stasi. Hiding in plain sight in the West German army, he must gather the secrets of NATO military strategy while trying to resist the pleasures that the West has to offer. Everything is new to him, nothing is quite what it seems and everyone he encounters is harbouring secrets.

Crashing

Written by and starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Broadchurch, Bad Education, Fleabag), Crashing crashes straight into the lives and loves of six twenty-to-thirty-something adults living together as property guardians in a disused hospital. It's about that time in your life when the reality of being an adult kicks you hard in the crotch. This time you’re not someone’s kid, you’re not a student, and you’re not fresh out of uni. This time you’re a grown-up. In an age of unaffordable housing and sky-high rents, becoming a Property Guardian has never been so appealing, with thousands of people paying as little as £25 a week to live in unoccupied buildings in exchange for 'protecting' the property from disrepair. Just imagine waking up every morning in your own historic building in the most exciting city in the world. Even if it is an enormous, creepy, derelict hospital

Fresh Meat

In the fourth and final series, the end of University life is drawing closer and when JP’s (Jack Whitehall) brother pays an unexpected visit, it’s a wakeup call for all the housemates. JP is told it’s time to knuckle down if he wants to land a safe job in the family firm, but is he made of the right stuff? Vod (Zawe Ashton) is wrestling with a debt that could sink a small Euro state, while Oregon (Charlotte Ritchie), now Student Union President, plans her legacy. Kingsley (Joe Thomas) finds himself in an unconventional relationship. Howard (Greg McHugh) is headed for a first Class degree, until some unexpected news sends him spiralling. And poor 2nd year Josie (Kimberley Nixon) faces the prospect of being without her friends for next year…

Indian Summers

Rachel Griffiths, Art Malik and James Fleet join Julie Walters and the rest of the cast of Channel 4’s record-breaking drama series Indian Summers in this second series. It’s the summer of 1935 – a season where old allegiances will be broken and new ones forged, where unbridled passions run wild and where revolution hangs heavy in the air. An assassination attempt on the Viceroy Lord Willingdon (Patrick Malahide), and the surprise arrival of Lord Hawthorne (James Fleet), puts Ralph’s (Henry Lloyd-Hughes) future in the balance. Meanwhile, Cynthia’s (Julie Walters) Royal Simla Club plays host to an important royal guest, the Maharaja Maritpur (Art Malik) and his elegant and mysterious mistress Sirene (Rachel Griffiths). Aafrin (Nikesh Patel) is embroiled in an intricate, dangerous and violent game of cat and mouse as he finds himself part of the escalating independence campaign alongside the beautiful and passionate Kaira (Sugandha Garg) and the unpredictable and volatile Naresh (Arjun Mathur). Alice’s (Jemima West) world is thrown into turmoil by the arrival of her estranged and abusive husband, Charlie Havistock (Blake Ritson). As the fight for Indian independence intensifies, all those who converge in Simla during this pivotal summer will find their loyalties tested, their relationships strained to breaking point and their world, as they know it, facing irrevocable change.

The Aliens, E4

Scabrously funny, shockingly violent and at times positively hallucinogenic, The Aliens is a wry and riotous adventure into a world that is at once entirely familiar and absolutely strange. It’s a culture clash, a gangster epic, but fundamentally it is an all too human search for acceptance and identity. Aliens have been among us since they crash-landed in the UK 40 years ago. Though they look and behave exactly like us, they are forced to live a segregated life, behind a huge wall in a ghetto called Troy. It’s a hedonistic and ramshackle town, unpoliced and filled with gangs who make a living smuggling alien hair out of Troy to be smoked as a drug by humans. Lewis is a border guard who mans the checkpoint between Troy and the human side of the wall. In common with most humans, he regards the aliens who pass through the checkpoint to do menial jobs on the human side of town as second class citizens. But when he discovers that he is the world’s first half-alien, he finds himself drawn into a world of divided loyalties and a search for his own identity.

Michael Socha (This Is England, Being Human) stars as the mild-mannered Lewis whose world is turned upside down when he discovers the criminal underbelly of Troy as he searches for answers to who he really is. Michaela Coel (Top Boy, Chewing Gum) is Lilyhot, an enigmatic and alluring alien who is deeply embroiled in one of Troy’s criminal gangs. When Lewis crosses her path, her fate and his become inextricably entwined. Joining them are Michael Smiley (Black Mirror, Kill List), Ashley Walters (Top Boy, Hustle), Holli Dempsey (Derek, New Worlds) and Trystan Gravelle (Mr Selfridge, Anonymous).

Set on a Wolverhampton council estate, it is a modern day re-imagining of the brilliant chaos of Caitlin and Caz’s childhood – loads of kids, no money and home-schooling. Stars Rebekah Staton, Helen Monks, Alexa Davies, and Philip Jackson.

Flowers

Written and directed by BAFTA nominated Will Sharpe, Flowers is an imaginative, cinematic comedy about an eccentric family struggling to hold themselves together. Husband and wife Maurice (Julian Barratt) and Deborah (Olivia Colman) live in a crumbling old house with Maurice's fruitcake mother Hattie (Leila Hoffman) and their maladjusted twenty five year old twins Amy (Sophia di Martino) and Donald (Daniel Rigby): both competing for the same girl and continually failing to burst through the confines of their absurdly arrested development. As Maurice fights inner demons and dark secrets, Deborah tries to keep the family together at all costs.

Calling Blighty (w/t)

Oxford Scientific Films (OSF), in association with Manchester’s North West Film Archive and the Imperial War Museums, has been commissioned to produce a 1 x 60’ special  for Channel 4, honouring Britain’s “Forgotten Army” through unique filmed messages they sent home to their nearest and dearest.

For these troops - fighting a savage battle against the Japanese in Burma and India - home leave wasn’t possible, post was slow, and sometimes letters didn’t get home at all. Some left behind pregnant wives or elderly parents who would pass away before they returned, or young children who would barely recognise them by the time they came.

Wall of Death – Live (w/t)

Daredevil Guy Martin will attempt to set a world speed record live on Channel 4. Guy will turn the ‘Wall of Death’ – the most dangerous fairground side show ever devised - into the most daring live TV event of the year.

The ‘Wall of Death’ is an epic stunt that involves riding a motorcycle around a vertical wall at high speeds. This spectacle dates back to the early 1900s and became a popular staple of travelling fairgrounds across America and Britain.   Guy and his support team of scientists and engineers plan to revive this stunt in epic fashion by attempting to set a Wall of Death world speed record.

SAS: Who Dares Wins Series 2

The new 6 x 60 series of SAS: Who Dares Wins will see the same ex-Special Forces team put a new group of civilians through the jungle phase of Selection – a key stage of the regiment’s entry tests that ups the pressure on recruits after the Wales-based tasks seen in the first series. Once again, every task they undertake will be taken from real SAS Selection, the series will be shot with minimal interference for maximum authenticity, and it will concentrate as much on psychological as physical fitness.

The first series has been described as ‘the best show on television’ (The Sun), a ‘thoroughly-addictive series’ (Daily Mail) ‘superior entertainment’ (Daily Telegraph) with The Guardian commenting: ‘The watermark for challenging reality shows has reached a new high.’

Heston’s Space Food (w/t)

This documentary will follow the real scientific adventures of Heston Blumenthal and his team, as they work closely with the UK Space Agency, ESA and NASA and attempt to revolutionise the previously limited world of space food, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the most scientific of ways.

British Astronaut Tim Peake’s six month mission at the International Space Station launches on the 15th December, where he will rocket into Space. Before he left, he set one challenge, to Heston Blumenthal. The task was to shake up the menu and create seven dishes that would remind Tim of home, helping him combat the emotional impact of his journey. Heston takes Tim on a nostalgic journey of his childhood with every bite, provides much-needed comfort food and creates the quintessential cup of tea – the first to be sipped in Space. In the meantime, ensuring of course that the nutritional value is not lost, whilst introducing multi-sensory, gravity defying food.

At the centre of Heston’s Space Food (w/t) will be Heston’s quest to push the boundaries of how we eat, delving into the biology of how our bodies react to being in space and how the physics and chemistry of eating can be changed within this environment. We follow Heston’s unfolding challenges, as he races against time and strict NASA food regulations to create foods that not only taste out of this world, but can be consumed in Space and most importantly at Zero

Documentaries

The Zoo

Chester Zoo is Britain’s most popular zoo hosting 1.4 million visitors every year. But few visitors ever see the world explored in this major new Channel 4 series. Using a range of filming techniques, including a micro-rig to capture animal behaviour close up, The Secret Life of the Zoo (working title) will take viewers behind the scenes – capturing in intimate detail both the remarkable behaviour of the animals and their close relationships with their keepers.

From a giraffe baby dropping six feet through the air as it’s born - to tigers moving house - to a pregnant viper being x-rayed, the series will present these spectacular rites of passage in the lives of rare animals as never before.

The series will also document not only the huge logistical operation required behind the scenes to keep 12,500 animals from 450 species fed, watered and happy but explore how the zoo has achieved breakthroughs in breeding rare and endangered species in captivity.

The Girl Who Forgave the Nazis Jan

Focused on the recent trial of 94 year old ex-Auschwitz accountant Oskar Groening, The Girl Who Forgave the Nazis tells one last unforgettable story from the holocaust. The trial led to worldwide controversy when one survivor, 81 year old Eva Kor, publicly forgave and embraced Oskar Groening in court. The image of their hug went viral. Incredibly, Eva forgave Groening despite the fact that almost all her family were killed in the Auschwitz gas chambers, and she and her twin sister Miriam were subjected to horrific medical experiments at the hands of notorious Nazi Doctor Mengeles. Both nearly died.

Eva believes her message of forgiveness can help change the world. But it made no difference at all to the outcome of the trial. Groening was found guilty of being an accomplice to the mass murder of 400,000 Jews and sentenced to 4 years in prison. His disturbing story is told by prosecutor and Nazi hunter Gunther Feld. We also hear the emotional stories of the last survivors living in Britain, who as children lost their families at Auschwitz yet somehow miraculously survived. Haunted by the horror of Auschwitz and what happened to them, some are angry at what Eva did, feeling the memory of their lost loved ones has been betrayed.

This deeply moving film documents the remarkable journey that led Eva to forgive the Nazis. It is an extraordinary account of terrible evil, survival against all the odds and great humanity.

The Ballroom Boys train six days a week and compete most Sundays. They’re serious about winning, and so are their mums. But as they gear up to compete against the best in Britain, our boys don’t just have the pressure of the competition to contend with. In an area where rugby is a local obsession, it isn’t easy to go against the grain. Even more so when dance competitions require the boys to wear makeup and fake tan, which doesn’t wash off before school. Facing disapproval from peers, friends and even fathers, when the competition is over, will any of the boys decide the pressure isn’t worth it?

Education

I Am The Perfect Man

This one off film will examine the rise in vanity among young men in modern Britain.  Increased popularity of social media has meant sharing ‘selfies’ has become common place with young men sharing twice as many selfies as women the same age. Surprisingly it’s men, not women, who are proving themselves to be the far vainer sex.

Gyms across Britain have seen a surge in teen boys attempting to become ‘hench’, shredded and ripped’ and teen body building is booming, with competitions in vogue for this age category.   Grooming and beauty treatments such as eyebrow waxing, blow dries and make-up, more commonly associated with women,  are now being embraced by young men who are spending nearly as much as women on beauty products..

As body image becomes more and more important to young men, teens in particular are seeking constant approval online, encouraging each other to look better, bigger and even browner in their pursuit of the perfect body.
