Major new documentary series follows murder investigation
Category: News Release
Channel 4’s Deputy Head of Documentaries Amy Flanagan and Head of Specialist Factual David Glover have ordered a 3 x 60 minute documentary series, Murder (w/t), following every twist and turn of a police investigation into the horrific murder of a teenager.
The Films of Record series, directed by Bafta-winning director David Nath (Bedlam) has been filmed over eighteen months with intimate and unprecedented access to a police major crime unit in Bristol as they investigate the stabbing of a 19 year-old.
Flanagan says: ““Unlike previous crime documentaries, this is uniquely shot as a drama - a ground-breaking police series followed in real time and inside the mind of the detectives. But with the heart-wrenching story of a young man’s senseless death, his family’s pain and the polices’ determination to achieve justice for them at its heart, viewers will be in no doubt they are watching real life; with all the far-reaching consequences such an act of brutality metes out on a community.”
This trilogy of films creates a distinctive, unfolding picture of a murder from the time the crime is initially reported. It weaves together the stories of three different worlds: a detective faced with an apparently motive-less crime, a family desperate for justice and another who’ll do anything to save their son from a life behind bars. We are taken into a world of guns and disrespect - the currency of the street. We’re led into a world of bad choices and moral dilemmas and as the net closes in we begin to see the ripples that spill out when a murder is committed.
A prime suspect with an alibi, a fugitive on the loose, and a murder detective and his team that has to find a murderer and answers for a grieving family.
The executive producer is Neil Grant and the series is directed by Dave Nath. Nath says: "This is the story of a senseless stabbing, a young life cut short. In Britain, it’s a story of now. If this series makes even one kid think twice about carrying a knife, then it will have been worthwhile. The impact of murder on a victim's family is absolutely horrific and we are immensely grateful to them for allowing us access."
