Nominations revealed for 2014's British Comedy Awards
Category: News Release
- This December’s British Comedy Awards on C4 mark the show’s 25th year!
- This year sees the introduction of new awards and re-introduces a few old favourites
- Toast of London scoops more nominations than any other show
This December marks 25 raucous years of British Comedy Awards, when host Jonathan Ross will return to oversee the one night of the year when the cream of British comedy will converge to celebrate the funniest programmes and personalities of 2014.
A variety of A-list guests will bestow the coveted awards on nervous nominees and viewers will discover who will be this year’s King or Queen of Comedy; a title held by reigning king Jack Whitehall for two years running. Will he retain his crown for a third year running? Find out on the night when all will be revealed!
Out of all the awards, Channel 4‘s Toast of London, produced by Objective Productions, leads the way with a whopping six nominations, making it the most nominated show since Gavin and Stacey’s break-out year in 2007. Toast of London’s nominations include Best New Comedy Programme, Best Comedy Moment 2014, Best Sitcom and a Best TV Comedy Actress nod for Doon Mackichan for her role as a hapless actor’s agent .
The good news continues for the show’s co-writer and lead actor Matt Berry, who himself has three nominations - Best TV Comedy Actor (Toast of London), Best Internet Comedy Short (Matt Berry: Lone Wolf) and for Best Comedy Breakthrough Artist for his role in the BBC’s House of Fools. Berry finds himself up against fellow Toast of London actor Harry Peacock in the Breakthrough Artist category, as well as Nick Helm from the BBC’s Uncle and Joe Wilkinson from C4’s 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.
This year also sees the introduction of two new categories - Best Internet Comedy Short and Best Comedy Moment of 2014. It also sees the re-introduction of the Best Comedy Film and Best International Comedy Programme; a title for which Sky’s American acquisitions Girls, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Modern Family and Veep will all compete. Another award that has been re-introduced for 2014 is the Best Comedy Drama category which will pit BBC shows Inside No 9, Rev, The Wrong Mans and Uncle against each other.
Elsewhere, BBC One’s Would I Lie To You received four nominations - Best Comedy Panel Show, Best Comedy Moment 2014, and one for each team captains David Mitchell and Lee Mack for Best Male TV Comic. The stars of Harry and Paul’s Story of the Twos Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse find themselves going head to head, and up against The Wrong Man’s Mathew Baynton and Matt Berry for the title of Best TV Comedy Actor. Harry and Paul's Story of the Twos received a further two nods, giving them four in total, for the categories of Best Sketch Show and Best Comedy Moment 2014.
And once again Alan Carr – who last year took home the title of Best Comedy Entertainment Personality – must defend his crown against Graham Norton, both Ant & Dec and The Last Leg’s Adam Hills.
There will also be TWO special awards given out on the night; The Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Award and The British Comedy Academy Lifetime Achievement Award.
The British Comedy Awards will air on Channel 4 in December.
The British Comedy Awards are sponsored by Lidl.
