RED seeking real life sex stories for new Russell T Davies web series

Category: News Release

RED production company is searching for members of the public to take part in an exciting and innovative new web series for Channel 4. The eight-part series titled TOFU is part of a trilogy of programmes devised by multi-award-winning showrunner Russell T Davies (Queer As Folk, Doctor Who) for Channel 4, E4 and online.

TOFU, although part of the family of programmes which include the hotly anticipated dramas CUCUMBER (C4) and BANANA (E4), is a light-hearted documentary series exploring all facets of contemporary sex culture. Each 20-minute episode will focus on a different topic through a dynamic combination of interviews, sketch comedy, animation, fantasy elements and musical set pieces.

The series is being made by prolific YouTuber Benjamin Cook who will explore, debate and celebrate sex and sexual taboos through a variety of scripted sketches and intimate interviews. Each episode will feature a diverse range of interviewees including the stars of CUCUMBER and BANANA, celebrities, stars of the porn world and candid chats with members of the public; showcasing new stars, creating new voices and new attitudes to sex and contemporary sexual culture.

RED is looking for contributors 18 and over, of any gender or sexual orientation, who are comfortable with, and confident in, talking about sex. Discussions will range from the challenges and triumphs of first sexual encounters or coming out through to teenage lust, one-night stands, disastrous sex and hook-up apps like Tinder and Grindr. Whether it is older gay men recounting the fear and frustration they felt when homosexuality was illegal, the surprising sexual adventures of housewives or teenagers’ first forays into sex – every story needs to be told.

Anyone interested in taking part needs to submit a short video (up to 90 seconds long) in which they recount their best “sexcapade” – whether it be good, bad, ugly or even lacking sex completely. Contributors can appear in the video on their own, or with a friend or partner, but all content must be discussion based.

The videos, which can be supplied in any format, should be sent to RED Production Company via the website: www.tofuvideos.com. More detailed information about the video content and how they will be used by production can also be found on the site.

Creator and writer behind the trilogy of shows, Russell T Davies, said: “While Cucumber and Banana are fictional, we know that often the sweetest, most heart-warming, most tragic and most heartbreaking stories are real life tales. Tofu is all about highlighting the very real issues that we reference in the fictional shows – it will be a unique mixture of content made by the very talented Benjamin Cook. ”

Benjamin Cook added: “We’ll be interviewing real people about their real experiences. Men, women, every gender – all the pronouns! – trans or cis, straight or gay, bi, curious, maybe you’re sex-obsessed or take-it-or-leave-it, or maybe you’ve – whisper the words – never had sex and aren’t afraid to say so. We want to hear from you. No subject and no individual is off limits. We can’t wait to hear your stories.”

CUCUMBER, BANANA and TOFU were commissioned by Channel 4 Head of Drama Piers Wenger and will be made by RED Production Company with Executive Producers Nicola Shindler, Julie Gardner and Russell T Davies. TOFU will be made by Benjamin Cook (Becoming YouTube).

CUCUMBER, BANANA and TOFU were originally developed by BBC Worldwide Productions. BBC Worldwide will distribute the shows internationally.
