Series synopsis and episode billings
Category: Press Pack ArticleWelcome to the disheveled and joy-filled lives of three native Hullians - Toni, Rana and Paula - as they juggle kids, family, work, demanding friends, and frustrating playground-parents - all whilst trying to squeeze in time for a bit of mucking about.
Toni’s an impulsive but big-hearted tornado of chaos. She’s a self-described actress with no acting jobs (she can be found ‘auditioning’ to hand out cheese samples in a supermarket car park). She adores her 4-year-old daughter Grace and her soulmate Craig, but she still dreams of escaping Hull and craves her pre-parenthood life. Toni’s bestie is Rana, a powerhouse policewoman whose daily life is ruled by her libido. She’d rather ‘investigate’ the full spectrum of Hull’s hottest bachelors than settle down. And then there’s Paula, Toni’s down-to-earth, matriarchal big sister who married childhood sweetheart Dane - Rana’s big brother - and had two kids, 17-year-old Ashley and 7-year-old Jake. Paula is Toni’s polar opposite: for her, there’s ‘no place like Hull’, and she just can’t understand Toni’s constant need for more.
Between them they're making the best of life on the shores of the Humber - even if, to the untrained eye, it looks like one never-ending balls-up.
Episode 1 - “Night Out”
Toni hasn’t had a night out since Grace was born and things are getting desperate. She secretly skips Grace’s drama club rehearsal for a sneaky pub visit - where Grace learns some new and colourful words. Paula’s tearing her hair out over Ashley’s terrible new boyfriend - though revelations about his dad’s job might help change her mind… Meanwhile Rana meets up with the Hull City player she met last night - realising too late that he isn’t quite what she remembered. Dragged into helping with his grandad’s wake, the arrival of a really fit family member gives Rana an incentive to stick around…
Episode 2 - “Dry-spell”
Toni’s on a mission to rekindle sexy-time with Craig - but there’s always something (usually Grace) in the way. Meanwhile Rana’s ex Adil is back in town and keen to get some alone time with Rana - Nima’s convinced he’s going to propose… Rana finds herself contemplating the unthinkable - settling down! His six pack and Lamborghini might have something to do with it. And Paula makes a breakthrough with disciplining her kids when a terrifying cashier teaches her a magic technique, but with great power comes great responsibility and Paula can’t handle it….
Episode 3 - “Mucky”
Toni accidentally takes home Grace’s classmate’s Gucci coat from pre-school - and instantly manages to stain it. Rather than own up to it, she tries to find someone willing to clean a designer coat - not easy in Hull - while also trying to get to a career-defining audition. Meanwhile, stressed-out Paula collapses and is rushed to hospital, but when she gets bumped up to a private ward she discovers there could be advantages of getting sick… Meanwhile, Rana takes her new man’s 11-year-old out shopping to impress him, but it isn’t the bonding experience she expected.
Episode 4 - “Party”
It’s the day of Grace’s flamingo-themed 5th birthday party and everything is going smoothly - until Grace comes down with an unexplained case of flamingo-phobia. Toni has just half an hour to ‘pivot’ to a new party theme - while deflecting curve-balls from Gloria, who is in full judgmental mode. Paula offers ‘expert’ advice from the sidelines and a badly hungover Rana steps up as a children’s entertainer but the puking princess doesn’t do much to paper over the cracks.
Episode 5 - “Breadcakes”
When the smug ‘super-Dad’ in charge of the pre-school PTA insinuates that Toni doesn’t contribute - or get much acting work - Toni offers to run a baked-goods stall at the school fair. Only she can’t bake. At all. Nima steps in with her ‘secret recipe’ (buying breadcakes from a local baker and passing them off as her own), and Toni throws herself into her new role as ‘artisan baker’. Chaos ensues on the big day when the baker shows up at the school fair… Meanwhile Paula discovers a saucy hidden talent and Rana’s competitive side comes out against Ashley.
Episode 6 - “New You”
After her first full night’s sleep since Grace was born, Toni is a new woman - she’s making career plans and she’s about to have a mega birthday party! Nothing can stop her now… or can it? Paula thinks she’s turned a corner with Ashley - who actually wants to spend time with her for the first time in 12 years…but things are not as they seem. Meanwhile, a failed hook-up with an old flame leads to Rana discovering that the meaning of life might not revolve around her libido - but enlightenment is short-lived.
