Interview with writer Lucy Beaumont

Where did the idea for Hullraisers begin? Fable approached me to write a pilot based on an Israeli sitcom, Little Mom. Hullraisers and Little Mon both have a joyful, playful tone and you believe that these women really are friends.

Interview with writer Anne-Marie O’Connor

How did you get involved in Hullraisers? I’ve worked with Hannah and Fay from Fable before and they asked if I'd like to come on board. Anything I've ever wanted to try and write in comedy, I was able to do with Hullraisers. It’s working class. It’s women. It’s funny. Toni is hubristic and selfish. She might be a mum but she's also got her own interests at heart, and I just think all that's funny.

Why were you attracted to this role? The scripts were amazing from the get-go. There were bits of improvisation and stuff like that, which was great.

Interview with Taj Atwal who plays Rana

What attracted you to this role? I really wanted to work with Fable Pictures, for a start. It’s a female-led, working-class comedy so there was that appeal to it too. And they gave us such a big input. It’s nice to have that voice and it feels like we’ve created it together. That’s such a unique experience for me. We all really had a hand in it all and I think that's why it feels so personal.

Interview with Sinead Matthews who plays Paula

What attracted you to this project? When I read the script, I was totally in from the get-go because I just thought it cut to the chase straight away. I got an immediate sense of these women and the honesty of them. They say what a lot of women at home are probably thinking but daren’t say. It felt authentic because Lucy is from Hull and it's a world that I wouldn't mind living in for a certain amount of time. They're such charming women and so funny, and they’re incredibly resilient. The world Lucy has created feels like a world maybe we haven’t seen before. There are a lot of programmes on TV that deal with motherhood but are quite middle class and London-based. So this is a very different lens which widens it out a bit. I’m so proud to be in it and be part of it.
