STAND UP TO CANCER SHORTS

TX: OCTOBER

Channel 4 has commissioned Maverick Television to make a series of personal and moving short films, each of which feature very different cancer stories, self-narrated by those affected and cutting to the heart of the impact cancer has on them.

Emotive and powerful, the films will be instrumental in raising awareness and re-enforcing the fact cancer is universal and indiscriminate; it can and does strike anyone, regardless of age, sex, race, status, wealth or a person's state of health. Its impact is as varied, both physically and emotionally, on not just the patient but those closest to them.

CURING CANCER

TX: OCTOBER

Every two minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer. From that life-changing moment the race is on to find a successful treatment to stop the disease in its tracks. With unprecedented access to the new MacMillan Cancer Centre at University College Hospital Curing Cancer, a Cutting Edge film, follows four patients taking part in trials of some of the most advanced cancer treatments in the world.

Dennis, Debra, Jeffery and Pete are all facing the future with trepidation, but they have all agreed to take part in ground-breaking trials aimed at improving the way cancer is diagnosed and treated. Made by BAFTA winning director, Brian Woods this film compassionately follows treatments from lab to ward and tells the story of the anxiety of diagnosis, the joy of success and the desperation of a last chance clinical trial. Philosophical about how cancer changes lives, but also fascinating in terms of what it reveals about new treatments coming through, this film is a sensitive and optimistic insight into the realities of living with cancer.

FEELING NUTS

TX: OCTOBER

A new organisation joins the fight against cancer, as the recently created public movement Check One Two is on a mission to get everyone ‘feeling nuts’ and spread the positive message of staying ahead of testicular cancer. It’s the most common cancer in men aged 15-44 and the aim is to empower men to take charge of their health and have the confidence to speak up if they notice something irregular.

In October, to increase awareness of this life saving message, C4 will be joining the movement with a studio show from the Brooklyn Bowl at London’s 02. Jack Whitehall will be taking us through an evening of surprise pairings, some seriously awkward conversations and a host of challenges, whilst empowering the nation to start feeling nuts and begin to breakdown the taboo of testicular cancer.

The movement was established by two sets of brothers, Simon and Andrew Salter and Simon and Philip Tucker, who launched Check One Two after hearing the story of one mother’s loss of her son at the age of 19 due to embarrassment and lack of knowledge.  Their aim is to remove this awkwardness and empower men worldwide with the positive message about staying in regular check with their testicles.

The Check One Two campaign has already reached over 10 million people since its inception earlier in the year. To find out more about Check One Two, visit http://www.checkonetwo.co.uk/
