Travel survey: Almost 40% of Brits not holidayed in the past 12 months

Category: News Release

  • Almost 40 % have not been on holiday either at home or abroad in the past year
  • 30% have not been abroad in the past five years
  • 1 in 10 Brits have never left our shores at all.

BUT WHY?

Richard Ayoade understands this aversion to travel and hates the hassle involved in going on holiday. In his new series, he aims to show us where we are going wrong.

  • 31% admit to finding going away generally stressful
  • 40% agreed stress was the key reason for not enjoying holidays in the past

Despite large numbers of us not travelling, we are still culture vultures:

  • 80% said they like to try local cuisine and experience new cultures when in different countries.
  • 60% say they make an effort to pick up the local language when abroad.
  • Just 32% admit to preferring  beach holidays over city-breaks

But, we are also creatures of habit when it comes to travel:

  • 38% of all adults have been to the same holiday destination more than once.
  • Despite Australia being the nation’s dream destination, 23% of us always go to a European destination when going abroad.

However, Not all of us are as restrained as others and there were exceptions to buck this trend:

  • Age: 14% of 16-34 year olds having been on holiday more than twice in the last twelve months.
  • Regions: 18% of those from London and the South East having been on holiday twice in the past year and 10% have been on holiday more than twice

'Travel Man', new four-part series in which Richard Ayoade plans the most efficient holidays possible, with all the boring bits taken out. Each week, he visits a new location and challenges himself to see and do as much as possible. In the first episode, he travels to Barcelona with actress Kathy Burke. Other stars lined up to accompany Ayoade on his trips incl comedian Adam Hills, actress Jessica Hynes and actor Stephen Mangan.
