Last night’s Alternative Election Night on Channel 4, hosted by Jeremy Paxman and David Mitchell, was the most watched election coverage on commercial TV. It achieved a peak audience of 2.4million / 12% share at 10pm and averaged 1.1 million / 8.9% share across the night (from 9pm to 2am) – more than any other commercial channel and second only to BBC’s coverage.

The blend of entertainment and comment, including special election themed episodes of Gogglebox and The Last Leg, also proved popular with younger viewers, particularly between 9pm and 1 pm when it was the most watched channel for 16-34s with a 20% share of the young audience. Over the whole night Channel 4 attracted a 15.3% share of the 16-34 audience – +90% up on the average for that slot.

Chief Creative Officer, Jay Hunt said; “From Coalition to Ballot Monkeys we have innovated to get audiences engaged with the election campaign. It’s fantastic that ambition culminated last night in millions choosing the Alternative Election coverage on Channel 4”.
