Channel 4 is a free-to-view video on demand service but we do require users register their details to watch. Registration is free and gives access to all of Channel 4's latest shows and unlocks access to an extensive archive of classic programmes and downloads to watch offline. Channel 4 streaming is designed to help us deliver programmes that our viewers will like and want to watch. We aim to personalise the experience so it's unique for our users and need viewer details to do this. It helps us get to know you better and deliver more targeted advertising which is how we fund our programming.
The content is free to watch because we are a 100% advertiser-funded broadcaster. As a government-owned, not-for-profit organisation, the revenue we make from advertising doesn't go to shareholders – it goes back into making more programmes.
Knowing more about our viewers also means we can restrict age related content to the right audience and ensure children and young people are unable to access inappropriate content on the service.
Our Privacy and Cookies policies (channel4.com/privacy and channel4.com/cookies) provide all the information you need to understand how, where and why we use your data. But you are in control and can update your preferences at any time, including by opting out of targeted advertising, personalisation and data pairing. To do this, sign in to your account at channel4.com – select My 4 – Account Settings. It's up to you whether you want to receive emails from us, but even if you haven't opted in to receive emails, we may still need to send you service messages, which will contain important information about our services, such as changes to our policies.
